Crown Lengthening in Beverly Hills
Expert Functional Crown Lengthening
In crown lengthening, a tooth is “lengthened” by removing excess gum and bone tissue to facilitate the placement of a crown (cap) or to fill a cavity. It is also used cosmetically to correct a “gummy smile” or to even out an uneven gum line.
Dr. Peto uses minimally invasive methods in order to maintain as much healthy gum tissue around the tooth as possible.
A tooth that is badly worn, decayed or fractured below the gum line poses a problem for restoration treatments, as there is not enough tooth structure above the gum to support a filling or crown.
Dr. Peto will remove gum and bone tissue to expose more of the healthy tooth structure in order to securely hold the new dental crown. Sometimes only gum tissue needs to be removed, but often bone around the roots has to be removed as well. Dr. Peto contours the actual tooth to minimize bone removal, which maintains the strength of the tooth and also ensures an accurate final fit of the crown.
Aesthetic Crown Lengthening for a Gummy Smile
Smiles look “gummy” when teeth appear shorter than normal or a smile is dominated by more gum than teeth. While it may appear that the teeth are simply too short, it’s actually an overabundance of bone and gum tissue covering a portion of the tooth. Extra gum tissue also makes it harder to keep teeth clean, which increases the susceptibility to periodontal infections.
To fix a gummy smile, Dr. Peto sculpts away excessive tissue to expose more of the tooth structure. He can also recontour uneven gum lines that are adversely affecting the look of your smile.
